Taught 6 classes today...and realized that most of my students tend to just copy from the board or from each other when they have to write in English. Only 3-4 out of about 180 students actually used their brains and wrote their own sentences/ questions for the activities.
How should a writing exercise be structured so that students actually use their brains and not just copy from the board or from each other?

Students have gotten copying down to a science....right down to matching the color of which the sentence was written by the teacher.
This problem can be solved by stopping the writing to in order to jog the learning.
Teachers need to stop writing so much on the chalkboard. Students need to learn how to take notes. While this style of learning might take some time to adjust to, I believe once the transition happens it will force them to start thinking for themselves. Once the importance of formulatic grammatic chalkboard explanations are reduced, I think there will be a little chaos, but the end result will outweigh the interm loss of learning disadvantage.
