I was talking to my JTE today about relative pronouns (that, which, who) and how he goes about teaching them.
When I questioned him about the use of a 'comma' before using 'which', he told me that particular grammar is saved for high school. I told him that while using which doesn't require necessitate a comma, it should be taught in basic English classes because it is grammatically correct and would help the students distinguish 'that' from 'which'.
He just smiled...
Japan's JHS English Twilight Zone definitely tests my sanity and patience.

I just had that same problem. But at least your jte recognized that there is a comma before the which. When I told my jte that, he just looked at me with a blank stare and said, "really, I've never heard that before, I don't think thats true."
My response inaudible under my breath, of course, naturally the native english speaker must be wrong, after all what does he know of japanese english education?"

i got that 2 weeks ago... when I was explaining the activity to my JTE, I told her that students should learn to use the comma with "which.." my JTE said, "hontou ni?? .. eh...." then she said that she learned it before but never used it. I told her that one is restrictive and one is non-restrictive... but we werent gonna torture the students with those terms in JHS... however, we should get them to start using the comma whenever necessary.
Then in class, I told the students to put a comma before "which" if they are going to use "which" instead of "that"... and the same teacher freaked out... and immediately put a parenthesis around the "comma" and told the students that you can use it or not in Japanese. WHAT THE HELL
BTW this teacher is hardcore blowing his nose behind me.. ..!!!
