I'm going to have a party with 13 of my adult students at an Izakaya this weekend. Usually we just chat in Japanese drinking beer but this time I'd like to play some kind of games in English. Their level is lower-intermediate. Anyone has any ideas?
You are welcome to join us by the way. ;D
thanks in advance.

Fizz Buzz is always a favorite. It's a drinking game so somehow the rules always change but you start off by counting ONE, then each number with the '3' or multiple of '3' (ie 3,6,9,12,13) the person must say Fizz for '7' or multiples of '7' they must say BUZZ if a number is both (21) they must say FIZZ BUZZ. Each time they make a mistake that person has to take a drink.

How about the card game.. "kill your neighbor" or whatever it is called... each person gets a card ... (they can look at it but dont show others) and the person to the dealer's right side starts the game by either keeping his/her own card or exchange it with the person to his/her right. Then the next person will do the same... go on until the dealer gets to go. Basically the dealer is the last person to play.. the dealer can keep his/her card or exchange it with the first card on the deck. Then everyone shows his/her card and the person with the highest card loses and has to take a drink. However anyone with the "KING" card has to reveal it immediately... the KING card is a stopper so the person to the left of the person who has a "KING" card cannot exchange and has to keep his/her card. If this is the case, then the person to the right of the "KING" card holder will continue the game by exchange or keeping the card. The "KING" is a safe card so anyone who has it... doesnt win or lose.

A word association game (in the UK it was popularized in the 80's by Mallet's Mallet). Usually 2 players can go head to head, but you can also play it as a group if you make a sequential order. One person starts with a word, for example "blue" the next person might say "orange" the next person could say "apple". The person to hesitate for too long or say a word that is not associated with the previous (usually decided by group consensus) is the loser and must drink whatever amount as forfeit.
Careful though, if one person's level of ability is lower than the rest of the group, making them drink more isn't likely to help them in future rounds. You could let them start the next round or introduce a pass option if you lost the previous round.

There's a game called Apples to Apples, which is a really game/drinking game. You can find online, or make a simpler version youself, basically players get a couple of cards with various adjectives on them and they try to match them to a card with a noun on them. A judge that switches every round decides which is the best match. The losers have to drink. This may be a little too hard for your students/too much work to set up in an izakaya, but it is a lot of fun if you get it going. Obviously the drunker you get the more outrageous the connection start to become. It gets pretty funny.
Also English shiritori games are fun drinking games, pretty much just like dickflem's game, keep the game going till someone hesitates too long or can't think of something must drink.

Each person takes a drink and takes off an article of clothing. That's it, pretty easy.

Damn it!! Who let the cat out of the bag?!?!?
Raindrop just discovered that most ALTs English games are recycling college drinking games...
AAhhhh...English mixing with alochol, or is it the other way around? Anyways, I've noticed that Japanese have an English nomunication ability that seems to be absent, minus the consumption of alcohol. Based on that simple observation, I would like to theorize if 'liquid party beverages' were given to our students, they effects could greatly improve the environment and English speaking abilities. Or maybe, if the teachers were allowed to partake of some happy-go-lucky juice before classes...

wouldn't that be the most exciting game, junkdna! and the funny thing is, I'm positive all my students would like to play that. too bad there aren't many male students. recycling is always good ne, otaku! alcohol helps students break the tension indeed.
