Japan baseball looking to fight global warming with shorter games Daily Yomiuri (March 18, 2008) TOKYO (AP) -- Japanese baseball is going green. As part of the fight against global warming, Japanese professional baseball has come up with a plan to shorten its games and reduce carbon dioxide emissions at stadiums. Teams will aim to cut playing time by six percent, or 12 minutes, from the average of three hours and 18 minutes per game, Japan pro baseball officials said Tuesday. Under the plan, teams will be required to spend no more than two minutes and 15 seconds when they change from fielding to batting. Pitchers will be asked to throw within 15 seconds of receiving the ball from the catcher when no runners are on base. The proposal to cut playing time was set in accordance with Japan's pledge to cut its emissions of greenhouse gasses by six percent from 1990 levels between 2008 and 2010 under the Kyoto Protocol on climate change. Japanese baseball officials said staging games results in a huge amount of carbon dioxides to be discharged through the use of energy to move players and spectators, supply electricity for lighting and other purposes. Japan is struggling to meet its emissions cuts obligations under the Kyoto pact. Even before the latest plan, Japanese baseball has been looking for ways to speed up the pace of games. hosted.ap.org/dynamic/stories/A/AS_SPT_BBL_JAPAN_GLOBAL_WARMING_ASOL-?SITE=YOMIURI&SECTION=HOSTED_ASIA&TEMPLATE=ap_national.html

Thank god, I fuggin' hate sports on TV, especially when it preempts something I want to watch. Anything that makes it shorter (or eliminates it altogether) has my approval.

BOO! SPORTS HATER! BOOOOO!
I think Japanese professional baseball is amusing to watch! Especially, when one of the filthy rich baseball players hits a homerun and receives a small stuffed animal!

Wait, hold ona second, reduce greenhouse gases by shortening baseball games... Hmm maybe instead of shortening baseball games, they should not pollute so much. You know like STOP BURNING PLASTIC!!! Besides half the joy of watching baseball is yelling at the TV to hurry the hell up. It gives you more time to down the beer your drinking to make the game slightly more bareable.
I guess shortening baseball games in the name of saving the environment just seems a little stupid. You know cause when I think green, I think Baseball...

I don't watch any sports that don't have a fixed time limit of under 2 hours. i think. Golf, cricket and baseball are not on my list of sports worth watching.
Women's beach volleyball; great for spectators and the environment.

"SPORTS HATER" -- damn straight. Professional sports is a joke. We pay grown men and women to throw a ball around. FTW?
Golf.... WHO THE HELL LIKES TO WATCH GOLF? Crap. I agree with you. And who thought commentators talking during a ice skating performance was a good idea. I don't give a flying donkey whether something was a double scoop, triple bust size or quadruple bypass. I just want them to shut up so I can enjoy a performance now and again.
Oooooooooo, beach volleyball!!! Hellz yeah. Good for spectators, the environment, AND POPULATION BOOMS!
"Here's to swimmin' with bow-legged women" Who said it and what movie?
