iht.com/articles/2008/03/26/style/26japan-food.phpInteresting 3-page article on 'yoshoku'. I don't agree with it completely though. There are statements like: foreigners don't know what yoshoku is, so they don't come to our restaurants. What!!??!?!?!? I'm not saying yoshoku is da bomb (but I do enjoy it), but... WHAAAAAAAAAAAAAT? Just because foreigners are smart enough not to visit overpriced restaurants doesn't mean that we aren't willing to try something. Weird... very weird.

That article was a crazy and fun read!
I can totally relate to this line in the article: "Yoshoku dishes make up the bulk of the menus at Japan's biggest chain diners, or family restaurants, like Jonathan's, Royal Host and Denny's. Several years after arriving in Japan in the 1970's, Denny's gave up its American fare for a menu heavy on yoshoku. So, as some homesick Americans seeking comfort food have found out, a Denny's in Japan has no Grand Slam breakfasts or hamburgers."
I CAN TOTALLY RELATE!! I was so pissed off when I went to Denny's for the first time in Japan that I didn't order anything but the largest 'beer' they had on the menu.
However, my favorite part of this whole article was when the founder of McDonald's in Japan, Den Fujita said: "The reason Japanese people are so short and have yellow skin is because they have eaten nothing but fish and rice for two thousand years. If we eat McDonald's hamburgers and potatoes for a thousand years we will become taller, our skin become white, and our hair blonde."[/size]

The article is very interesting...
I guess I haven't been eating enough hamburgers... I'm still yellow.

Nah, it's because you are eating too many MOS burgers, all the moss balances out the white in the McDonald's food.
