Well, I asked my wife, and she vehemently denied this ever being Japanese culture and wondered what planet this character was from.

well I don't really know what to say. This is totally wrong, but I do think things like this happen in Japan but never become big news like this. Maybe this guy was drunk. I've seen this happening at a bar... but usually they just laugh it off, which is very annoying.
I was talking to my friend who works in a casino in vegas, and he was playfully hit his bottom by a drunk woman. She just laughed it off. He thinks it's so unfair women get away like that.

I wouldn't say this was representative a Japanese culture either. However, the way I pictured this event is something I do see a lot. A Jiichan grunts and "gently shoves" his wife out of the way....

well i know sexual harrassment happens, but he claims he was just warning her of her impolite manners with a tap on her bottom and then claiming it was japanese culture to do so. whether or not he was just sexually harrassing her, is another all together. i *know* he sexually harrassed her. i just couldn't believe he was claiming 'culture' to ahem... cover his ass.
i dont think he was drunk, he was in an airport getting his luggage.

yeah, i was embarrassed too. my wife was pretty angry. anyway, thanks for your input on a very embarrassing subject raindrop. sometimes when people claim something like this is 'culture', if you are not part of that culture natively, it's hard to know whether or not they are speaking the truth or just making it up.

I have lived here in Japan for many years and I would say it is certainly not normal behavior
