Why is it that CNN has more information in it's one report on the recent spate of gassing suicides than all the English-language media outlets combined? Why is it that many English translations of the news are so information-poor? Why? Why!? WHY!? Before attempting to answer these questions, know that they are rhetorical. I know the reasons (for the most part), I'm just super frustrated. Japanese news (and its English-language version) is so completely incompetent at times, it's mind-blowing.

To be honest with you, I don't know if I would be so smug about that. You are missing a lot by not tuning in.

I don't watch the news ever, but i read it every time I'm at JHS. So I wonder if the reason japanese news and its english translations are so poor is because of government censorship issues. Either that or the news reporters censor it themselves. But then again, its not like it would matter whether or not they censored or not, anyone reading a newspaper would "ehhh...kawaiisou" and then act like nothing ever happened. The pervading atmosphere of I'm ignorant of the world around me and I prefer to keep it that way surrounds us all.
But i do agree its amazing that you don't see anything about this in the japanese media. Maybe instead of stop za ijime assemblies we should "don't kill yourself with poisonous gas" assemblies. Maybe that'll get the word across. Killing yourself = bad.

to be honest i dont think so. the media outlets translate the articles themselves. and it wouldn't make sense to have information in the japanese article and not the english article.
