I am really concerned with my JTEs and the amount of homework they have to correct. I think they give so much homework that they don't stop and really stop and CORRECTLY grade it. I offer to grade but nobody has taken me up on the offer yet.
Just today, I noticed the JTE simply putting a circle on each of the papers graded without actually looking at homework. I was in utter shock because there were a ton of mistakes on the students' homework.
In my opinion, students can become better at English if they don't know where their mistakes are at...

I have to doubt the effectiveness of homework at all. Even if the teacher checks each mistake, how many of the students are going to even look. It may benefit the better students, but let's face it, those who need the most help, won't even glance at it. I sometimes get asked to grade homework. The write each word 10 times is so pointless. Again those who need the most practice aren't aware of how they should do the assignment, they just want to get it done. Most times they make a mistake in the second word and thus all 9 words are misspellings. Then the fill in the blank are just as bad. In one class I know that the students copy from their classmates. One time this classmate had bad handwriting so his friend did his best to decipher what he wrote. This wasn't a very bright student because he ended up writing the numbers 41 in the middle of a word. I brought it to the attention to the teacher and he commented, I will have a talk with the student. He then went on to add, "though I doubt he would be able to finish the assignment on his own." Alfie Kohn has a book called 'The homework myth' I have never actually read it, but his articles that I have read give pretty convicing arguments. Some homework is helpful, but I cringe when my children have to read to me everynight. Chi-chan no kageokuri was pure torture for me. It is a story about a little girl whose family was killed by the atomic bomb. In the end, she dies, too. I had to listen to that story over 20 times. It seems like there is one heart wrencher every year. Hey, some are great stories but to have to read it aloud every night! Come on enough is enough!

They are not correcting, they are just checking to see if the homework was 'done'. All that counts is 'effort'.
