Consider the following sentence: "I want to go to the store."
If the main grammar point of the above sentence is the infinitive (to+verb), would not the main focus of the sentence be "to go"?
This is where my frustration comes into play. Today, the infinitive lesson was taught focusing on: "I want to go to the store." However, if the focus of the grammar point is infinitives, isn't the 'to' connected to the verb 'go'?
I understand that in Japanese the grammar point would be '‚µ‚½‚¢' but if you are studying infinitives, the focus of the sentence is not ‚µ‚½‚¢, but rather 'to+verb'.

personally in junior high, I would stay away from words like infinitives and just teach the phrase as one whole.
'want to go' Once they understand how to use this phrase, it will be easier to substitute other verbs.

I think they are focusing on with WANT. ie WANT + TO VERB. Which means ‚µ‚½‚¢ in Japanese.
so I think they are looking at one use of infinitives (with want)
btw. Yes, TO is with GO.

I think they are focusing on with WANT. If they are focusing on 'want', they shouldn't ONLY 'bold' the infinitive part of the example sentence. DOH! And Gumby, I think teaching 'want to go' as a phrase is interesting. If I had anything to do with rearranging the textbook grammar, I think I would teach 'want' and 'need' together.

I agree that want and need should be together instead of canned separately.
And yes, I don't get why 'want to' would be the only part underlined toegther.
I would start them off with stuff like. "I want a hamburger" "I need a hamburger" "For the love of god, get me a decent burger!" (okay, I inserted that for dramatic effect) "I want a PSP" "I need water" etc. etc.
That gets them in the mode of using 'I need + noun' and 'I want + noun'... and as we are all aware, they learn infinitives in the second year, turing an action into a noun. I believe that I need/want should be covered much earlier, and then later reviewed once they pick up the structure for infinitives.
