I was asked to make reading the textbook fun, so I went to my favorite fansubbed manga site and printed out some individual pages of some translated mangas. My JTE thought this was the best thing in the world, the kids in the class took one look a page of english and shut off their brains without even trying. Even though the English was remarkably simple. I mean I used Doraemon for crying out loud. But I think it could be a lot better if I knew how to blot out some of the text bubbles. I can save the individual pages as .jpgs from off the site. Does anyone know how to blot out the text bubbles? Then they could either fill in what they think goes there or they cold listen to the actual and translate it into japanese. The mangas are all fansubbed but use the same character designs. As for copyright laws, I only used non-American licensed mangas, and since their fansubbed I also thought they would fall under the same legal loop that allows independents to make doujinshi's. Also he made me try and translate them into japanese and then constantly corrected them when i translated them into proper japanese since i don't know how to speak like an angry 13 year old. If anyone wants the site for activities or just for reading its www.onemanga.comthey have freakin everything its pretty awesome.

That was done a while back with Penny Arcade strips here: yukihime.com/comics/paremix/Here is the link to Penny Arcade, which I would probably not check out at school: www.penny-arcade.com/And I`ve also seen it done with Calvin and Hobbes strips. (Oh, what`s this?: www.marcellosendos.ch/comics/ch/) I used them at one point, and it`s easy to edit the text out of them. Just drop it in paint, go to view>zoom, and erase out the text. Save as a .png and you won`t lose too much quality. Saving as a .jpg will make it grainy. My JTE had a bunch of Calvin and Hobbes images (without knowing what they were) that she used for headers on her worksheets all the time, so it was kind of cool to show the kids where they came from. I wouldn`t give them English strips to translate...too much effort with not enough gain, especially if they`re Doraemon which they`re already familiar with. Not as much excitement, and they already have expectations for the story and so on. I`d go with what they did on yukihime.com and have them write their own scripts. Or doing it as a listening activity might be a pretty good idea, depending on the strip. I kinda really like that, actually.

*snickers* The Yukihime guy got MEGAPISSED at me years back when I called his student-made comics 'fakes'. I don't know what prompted me to do so at the time--I think I was having a bit of fun with him--but he got really nasty and ripped into me. My bad.

lol somehow I'm not to surprised with that ;D I just gave it to them in English and the JTE told them to translate. While the kids seemed pretty miserable, the JTE was having a blast. So much so that he spent the rest of the day telling me how awesome that idea was. lol It7d be nice to be able to clear out the text bubbles from the comics but I'd have to do it at home, since my work computer lacks Microsoft WORD and I'm stuck with crappy open office in japanese. I do still catch that JTE sneaking glances at that manga site to read the english versions of his favorites during work hours, its pretty funny... Also I totally read webcomics at school, penny arcade included. If you want other pretty decent comics for games and such, I recommend Order of the Stick (dnd oriented humor but with very emotive faces and action scenes) www.giantitp.com/comics/oots.htmlAnd Doctor McNinja which pretty much sums up the comic in its title. www.drmcninja.com/

For alternatives to using picture-editing software on your computer, you can always use a free online software of Paint Shop Pro, a simple to use picture editing program. This should bypass the firewalls on your school computer because you don't need to download anything to use the program. However, to use the program, you need a Adobe Flash, which is a small generic software that SHOULD (but probably isn't) installed on your computer that allows your computer to surf most websites these days. More and more sites are using this type of Flash technology. If it isn't installed on your computer, it is a reasonable request to have it installed..considering it is free software and should have already been installed on the computer. However, Microsoft Office should have been installed on the computer, also... www.photoshop.com/express/landing.html

Try www.vtunnel.com and use it and write the address of where you're trying to go. 50/50 it will work...
