CHAMPLAIN, N.Y. -- Customs and Border Protection officers seized a pleasure boat and arrested three Canadian citizens after the captain of the 27-foot vessel allegedly tried to smuggle two people in the United States illegally.
New Boater Check-Point Pays Off
Robert Bernier, 45, of Longueuil, Quebec, was arrested on federal charges of alien smuggling after border agents found two people hidden in cabin of the boat, border agents said.
Bernier, the captain of the boat, was intercepted by border patrol agents Monday at 4 p.m. as he tried to apply for entry into the U.S. at the newly opened Rouses Point boat inspection dock, border agents said.
Bernier, the captain of the pleasure boat Vague A Bond X, had come ashore and advised border patrol officers that he was traveling alone, agents said.
During a canine search of the vessel, agents were alerted to the boat's sleeping area, where agents said they found a man and a woman hiding inside a cubby hole and under a mattress respectively.
Erika David, 27, of Pierrefonds, Quebec, and Jessy Tremblay,39, of Montreal, Quebec, were arrested on federal charges of attempted illegal entry into the U.S. without inspection.
All three Canadians involved in the incident were taken into custody and are being held at the Clinton County Holding Facility pending arraignment. The Vague A Bond X was seized.
"The arrests over the weekend demonstrate CBP's vigilance in protecting all of our borders -- land sea and air," said James T. Engleman, CBP director of field operations for the Buffalo Field Office.
While CBP has recently stepped up its efforts near the U.S./Canadian border, it is unclear if those efforts led to the arrests.
