Boy, 14, held after bus hijacking at knifepoint
NAGOYA (Kyodo) Police arrested a boy Wednesday for hijacking a bus on the Tomei Expressway in Okazaki, Aichi Prefecture.
At the time of the incident, 10 passengers and the driver were aboard the Nagoya-Tokyo double-decker bus operated by JR Tokai Bus Co. No one was injured, although the boy threatened the driver with a knife, according to police.
The boy called them on his mobile phone at around 1:10 p.m. to say he had hijacked a bus. After the bus stopped at the Miai rest area, police persuaded him to surrender and arrested him on the spot at 1:56 p.m. for violation of the weapons control law and confinement.
The boy made no specific demands while on the bus, only saying, "I want to run," according to police.
The boy, who was in possession of two knives, said he is 14 and a second-year junior high school student from Ube, Yamaguchi Prefecture.
"I wanted to cause trouble to my parents because I was scolded," the boy was quoted as telling police. "I wanted to cause a great sensation."
He left home early Tuesday, prompting his family to ask police to search for him.
According to JR Tokai Bus, the boy was seated in the upper level. But he came to the driver's seat holding a fruit knife in his right hand.
He was also carrying another knife with a 20 cm blade, police said. He was dressed in a black long-sleeve T-shirt and wore sunglasses.
Coincidentally, another employee of JR Tokai Bus seated near the driver quietly used his cell phone and asked the company to call police, the bus operator said.
Without being aware of the call, the boy threatened the driver to tell all the passengers to surrender their cell phones and gather on the lower level. Then he called police on his own, the carrier said.
