There might be a pedantic difference at the higher levels of English but at the basics, where most of our students are, I wouldn't say there is much of a difference.
I would say "think about" sounds proper, whereas "think of" sounds more like something you would hear on the street.

I agree. I don't think there is much of a difference (if any), with few exceptions(*) where it might have specific meaning.
* - there are always exceptions.

thanks for all the replies, guys. It wasn't exactly a question from my student, but from me. It just sounds like to me that, when you care about someone (e.g. lover) ... you'd use "think of"... instead of "think about"? I mean when I look at all the love songs..? thank you !

I wrote back to this yesterday saying something just like that, but a network hiccup made me lose the response...
"I`m thinking of you" seems more `romantic` than "I`m thinking about you" -- about you seems more concrete. Can`t put my finger on why, though.

Thank you rollypop!!!! YES! That's exactly how it sounds to me. more romantic!!! I'd rather be told "I'm thinking of you." than "I'm thinking about you." for some reason. interesting, eh?

Yeah, every time I read the "I`m thinking about you" I think of charades or a guessing game...
"I`m thinking of a word...starts with Q..."
