A JTE at my school today who has 16 years experience told another JTE with 5 years experience (who I think is the best JTE I've ever taught with) that he needs to use less English and more Japanese in his English classroom! What subject are we teaching...I'm confused! Since when is using English in English class a bad thing? However, this is the same teacher who marked a student wrong for writing English on the test instead of writing Japanese.
My jaw hit the ground when I heard this. I told him not to worry about it because not only is the atmosphere 100% better in his classes but his students are speaking a lot more English than her students.
It's comments like "use more Japanese in English class" that make me wonder about Japan's English education system.

Thats a shocker!
The more English spoken the better! I totally agree with you! Thats the 1 big fault with my JTEs, they are very good but do tend to speak too much Japanese when they could have said it in English! Simply put, the more English is spoken the faster they will get used to it and become comfortable with it (as you say, its NOT a Japanese class)

LOL! The same senpai of the teacher who told another teacher to use more Japanese in English class received a shocking discovery this morning in her class. She teaches all the grade 2 JHS students. This morning, we were warming up the class and her students got stumped by a question straight out of the 1st grade textbook: "What's your favorite subject?" I think a little less Japanese and a little bit more English would have fixed this problem

This teacher is pissing me off now. At the end of the week me and a JTE I think is a great teacher is having a TT demonstration class for the bosses of the boss of the BoE, so we had a demo class where 9 of the teachers in the school came to watch our class. Well, needless to say, a classroom of originally genki students fell deadly silent when they saw us walk in with 9 other teachers. Usually, when I ask for volunteers, at least 15 hands shoot up...today zero.
Anyways, we had a meeting after the class where the 9 teachers took turns for the next 50 minutes pointing out everything we did wrong...like I care what the math and P.E. teachers think.
BTW, me and the JTE did about a 95% English demonstration. Finally, the same stupid JTE pipes up one more time, "You must use more Japanese in class," to which the other teachers nodded in agreement. Did I already say that I could care less what the science teacher and art teacher thought? One teacher even went as far as saying, "When I was a junior high school student...," to which I was thinking to myself, "You didn't even have ALTs back then, you 45 year old @%#$!"
What is this teachers' malfunction of using Japanese in English class?

Ha ha, my bad.
She sounds like a nightmare.
Is there some sort of ALT council? Where suggestions of ALTs can be put forth to the people in charge of teching new JTE's?
