Again, woefully under informative. It mentions perm residents and workers of Japanese descent who hold residential status such as migrant workers. The first one I understand completely since these are people who have been living in Japan for extended periods of their lives, and the second one I agree with... to a point. I'm not sure I understand why these folks have to be of Japanese ancestry. What is the difference between them and me? They aren't Japanese, they likely don't consider themselves Japanese, and they are just as likely to return to their home country as I would (with exception perhaps). So... that leaves me asking, what about non-Japanese foreign nationals who has resident status in Japan? We pay taxes, have families, live and work in Japan like everyone else. So... are we or aren't we being taken into account? And if not, why? The article mentions nothing of this, and I would not be surprised if no one thought to think of us (either in reporting the story or considering the payout). Why is it that this group of foreign nationals--which undoubtably there are many more of than perm residents--is always left in limbo?

I would hope that if students get the money than those of us with resident status are included.
But a lot of stuff in governments (and in Japan) don't make sense.

Yeah, I am wondering, does "perm resident" mean everyone with "resident" status? Or just those with "PERM RESIDENT" status? How rigid is this? My father-in-law was saying that I would likely get money too if the idea went over, but who knows. Frankly, I'm not worried about it either way, I'm just concerned about the fuzziness of the wording. I realize this is completely intentional, but really, it needn't be.

Junkdna, out of curiosity, is there a reason why you haven't already applied for permanent residency? As a spouse with a child it would seem you already meet the requirements. It sure beats having to get your visa renewed every few years. (although you still need the re-entry permit - relatively easy to get)

I'm not planning on living here permanently. you don't have to live her permanently to get one. I suppose it depends on just how long you are thinking of staying for. If it just a few years then its not worth it but if its for more than 5 or 6 years then its probably worth it. You don't need to renew your visa (every few years) is perhaps the best reason to do it. But you still need a re-entry perm if you travel overseas. I have perm residence

It's been 10 years now, and frankly, I just couldn't be bothered. I have a wife, son and second child on way. I'm happy enough with that.

As an update, my city told me that we have to make sure we are registered by Feb. 1 in order to get the money. So, I guess we will get it?

I have heard nothing concrete yet and it's already the first. Frankly, I wouldn't count on it, and if it comes, do a little dance.

Personally I would rather the gov. here keep the damn money and NOT raise the consumption tax up to 10% as expected in the next few years. The amount to be given out as well isnt going to help out all that much anyway and it seems to me to just be a ploy by the LDP and Aso to get more votes when the elections finally come around.......just like Bush tried doing in the US but we all see how that turned out for him and the Republicans. I guess one can only hope. Great way to use our tax yen huh........
