Even when somebody studies another language, many times the little things are forgotten. For example, I studied a little Japanese in college but when I came to Japan I might have been able to write a little kanji but I knew nothing about how to write Japanese on a computer. For example:
1. It took me a long time to figure out how to write ƒeƒB properly on computer.
2. In English, the parenthesis ( "...." ) is used to quote something, but in Japanese the kako ( u...v ) is used.
3. It was even until recently, I learned a bit more about romaji rules.
So, recently, I've been thinking, was are some basic English things that the students don't know. This is what I have come up with thus far:
What other things have you noticed?

So, recently, I've been thinking, was are some basic English things that the students don't know. This is what I have come up with thus far:
- I'm not quite sure students understand that when writing English, you keep writing on the same line until you reach the end of the line and then drop down to the next line and continue writing. In my experience, I see students either writing their English sentences exactly like they are seen in their textbooks, or they write one sentence on one line.
- I don't think students know what to do if they have reached the end of a line on their paper and they have started writing a word. I don't think they know their are only two options: 1.) erase the word and write it on the next line, or 2.) insert a dash after the partially written word and finish writing the word on the next line. In my experience, I see students doing two things: 1.) they don't use a dash and simply drop down to the next line and continue writing the word, or 2.) the word is twisted and written vertically down the side of the page.
- I regularly see students leaving a space after the last word of the sentence and the puncuation. For example, "I am from America . I'm not quite sure students fully understand punctuation comes immediately after the last word.
