This is not related to teaching and Japan, but recent news
Obama is/was a 1st term senator and became President.
Can any Americans tell me if he was the 1st or 2nd first term senator to become President?
in other words, how rare is it?
Thanks
I imagine he is not the very 1st, but .....

I don't know that much about presidents' history. I remember as far back as 5 presidents and I don't believe any of them came from the senate...I think.
I tried to do some research on the net about it. It merely mentions he was a 1st term senator and became president. I couldn't find anything about how rare this was.
Sorry!
In other news, I didn't know Obama used to be a university law professor...

This site has some facts about the presidents. www.heptune.com/preslist.htmlAccording to it, these people (15)were all Senators before being President. - James Monroe - Virginia
- John Quincy Adams - Massachusetts
- Andrew Jackson - Tennessee
- Martin Van Buren - New York
- William Henry Harrison - Ohio
- John Tyler - Virginia
- Franklin Pierce - New Hampshire
- James Buchanan - Pennsylvania
- Andrew Johnson - Tennessee
- Benjamin Harrison - Indiana
- Warren Harding - Ohio
- Harry Truman - Missouri
- John F. Kennedy - Massachusetts
- Lyndon Johnson - Texas
- Richard Nixon - California
Looking at each of them one-by-one shows: - Monroe was in the Senate 4 years, thus not even a full term (he became the Minister to France before he could finish his term)
- John Quincy Adams was in the Senate and then was appointed as Minister to Russia after serving for 6 years.
- Jackson was a Senator twice, both times for less than a full term.
- Van Buren was a Senator for more than one term before becomming governor of New York.
- William Harrison was a Senator for less than 3 years before becomming the Minister to Columbia.
- Tyler served for 11 years.
- Pierce served for one (?) term.
- Buchanan served for a while.
- Andrew Johnson was a Senator for one (?) term.
- Benjamin Harrison was in the Senate for at least one term.
- Warren Harding served for at least one term.
- Harry Truman was in the Senate for 10 years.
- John F. Kennedy was a Senator for 8 years.
- Lyndon Johnson was a long-time Senator.
- Nixon was only in the Senate for 2 years before becomming VP under Eisenhower.
There may be others that that one site doesn't list, but I am going to go with what they have for now. This site has some more info, and links to official biographies if you want more information. www.ipl.org/div/potus/
