My third year students just finished up a round of tests at school, so my JTE wanted me to come up with a couple of English activities to help them relax. I think I just added a new job responsiblity to my CV -- English relax therapist.
Anyways, so I decided this was a perfect time to try out a new warm-up activity I'm about to post to the site called ‚Ç‚ñ‚¾‚¯ Money. It's a fun activity where students blindly wager money as to whether or not they can spell words. I thought this game would be easy, but I was sadly mistaken. Remember...this is a 3rd year class, which I thought was a high-level class. In my defense, I don't teach Phonics in this class. Here are some of the results:
WORD----------STUDENTS WROTE
1. car-----------------card, cold
2. easy--------------PERFECT!!!
3. bike---------------PERFECT!!!
4. school------------PERFECT!!!
5. notebook--------not book, nootbook, Notebook
6. difficult-----------bifficult, befficult, difficart
7. important--------inportant, emportant,
8. telephone-------tell phon, cell phone, tere phon, tere holl, tereton
9. money------------many, maney,
10. black--------------look, brake, brack, luck, lack, briak, brag
11. often-------------offen, afternon, after,
12. heavy------------heby, fevey,
13. light---------------right, righf, write,
14. example----------exthempor, exsample, exsampol, exampoor, exzenpor, exmpor
15. sunglasses------sungrases, sungrasis, sun graces, ƒTƒ“ƒOƒ‰ƒX
The most interesting thing to note was that the word 'MONEY' was written on the handout but it was still spelled wrong.
It's really amazing how poor the students do on a simple review exercise they haven't been given the answers to study for.
