Just some comments to add. Its not imprtant, but more for interest sake. Was cleaning out some papers and came across these notes.
Comments from students It was difficult because I didnft gesture It was difficult because my friend didnft understand It was difficult because my friend used difficult gestures It was fun because I laughed a lot It was difficult because I had no words
I like to introduce this class with a story about my mishaps with the Japanese language. I tell a story about me going into a supermarket to buy eggs, butt he lady didnft understand me. So, in the middle of the local supermarket (I tell them which one and they laugh as it is really small and really inaka) I start flapping arms like a chicken and squatting down, then gesture something coming out of my butt. The shopkeeperfs eyes light up as she gets it and takes me to the eggs. Putting the importance of gestures in a context they will understand is a good way to get the interested, and a way fro them to try and begin to grasp what it is like to have limited access to a language and trying to communicate without real words.

Well it could be added to the gesture game outline?
you know the one which is posted. a surprisingly well recieved activity by students and teachers alike.
I toyed with the idea of giving the finger, but instead explained the shove it (reverse victory symbol) and that if they used it to a foriegner they would probably get physically assaulted. Good reaction faces to that fact.
