Hi rollypop, thanks for the kanjireader link. I actually posted it in a different thread. =)

I think it might have been kofunsuru...I don`t actually remember. It was years ago.
junkdna > I thought the joke sounded a little too perfect. What do you think of it? Does it actually look worth the cost?

sorry man, i missed the joke somewhere along the line. =(
anyway, as for the kanjireader, is it worth it? not for the average learner and not for the average ALT who is only going to be here a year or two or three. it's more of a professional level tool in my opinion. which is why I have asked the company to include more dictionaries, like their did in their 'Professional' version English > Japanese Kanjireader which has technical dictionaries in it.
In any case, I have been invited to their offices to check out the product. I am sure anyone can get the same invite if you ask though. They seem a very professional group.

Joke wasn`t really a joke, just you very-conveniently mentioning the pen dictionary earlier. Anyway, moving on --
That was my dig with it too - I couldn`t help but be a little jealous of all the dictionaries the other one had on it, as unuseful as the E>J one is to me. What I`d really like to see is what potential there is for "updating" it...I think other pen-dictionaries they sell come with computer cords to update the dictionaries. If you can plug it into a computer, there`s the potential to play with it. ...that may not have come out quite right.
Are you going to go check it out? I think I`ll drop them a line...I`m pretty curious.

I think I`ll drop them a line...I`m pretty curious. Sorry, I'm a bit thick. =) Yeah, I agree with you. It would be GREAT to be able to update it online. A little USB plug and updates would be super easy. Again, I really think this is lack of forethought on the maker's part. It's as if the product were created as an afterthought. Until Japanese companies can start thinking globally (even the smallest ones) I'm afraid this is the realm to which we will be regulated. I am wanting to go see it on Friday the 11th, but I am thinking I won't have enough time as I fly to the US at 5pm that day. After that, I don't think I will have a chance to check product again until November. =( But I *WILL* check it (and make suggestions for a next gen), as I am very interested in getting it. If you go before, let me know what you think. Take your OWN books to test.

Okay, correct me if I`m wrong... I get the impresson that what might have happened is the Japanese company (Japan21) took a western-audience-intended product and tweaked (different dictionaries, different character recognition) it for Japanese audiences...or else Wizcom is into incomplete marketing. First, Wizcom seems to be German, and pretty thoughtful. www.wizcomtech.com/Wizcom/about/about.aspIf you scroll down to the "translation dictionaries" section it says this: But then I couldn`t find the Kanji-specific pen anywhere on the Wizcom site (though it is Wizcom hardware) to check its specs and figure out if it was a "built-in" (hard coded?) or "proprietary"-allowing (HA! We`ll see about that) dictionary. So I went to the horse`s mouth. According to kanjireader.net/specifications, the pen is a "QuicktionaryII" model pen. But: Thanks, guys. Anyway, let`s assume they`re being honest with themselves and everyone else and it`s really a QuicktionaryII. Going back to Wizcom... Cool. And their pdf manual < kanjireader.net/refs/quicktionarytwoop.pdf> , hosted at the Japan21 kanjireader.net site (and therefore implying that it`s more-or-less relevant information): * A QuickLink Pen is a digital highlighter, basically. www.wizcomtech.com/Wizcom/products/product_info.asp?fid=101And while that page says it comes with a USB cord, it`s referring specificially to the "elite" version. But why make a digital highlighter product and cripple it until you release the "elite" version? (Money, sure, but let`s be idealistic and hopeful for a moment.) Whether or not the cd is included with the Kanji pen, if the hardware is actually the same (as implied in the specs), there should be a way to connect the pen to a computer. And you know what that means. Have you asked them if it`s usb-capable? All this is kind of moot if you`ve actually asked...or if one of us actually asks... Yay, a half-hour wasted on tenuously-relevant research! That`s what they get for forgetting to bring me on the field trip... : P

I'll buy that research for an 'exalt' point...
