news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20080531/ap_on_re_as/japan_closet_woman;_ylt=AkiDClmlRHy6BqrZOZ5XDsEZ.3QATOKYO - A homeless woman who sneaked into a man's house and lived undetected in his closet for a year was arrested in Japan after he became suspicious when food mysteriously began disappearing. Police found the 58-year-old woman Thursday hiding in the top compartment of the man's closet and arrested her for trespassing, police spokesman Hiroki Itakura from southern Kasuya town said Friday. The resident of the home installed security cameras that transmitted images to his mobile phone after becoming puzzled by food disappearing from his kitchen over the past several months. One of the cameras captured someone moving inside his home Thursday after he had left, and he called police believing it was a burglar. However, when they arrived they found the door locked and all windows closed. "We searched the house ... checking everywhere someone could possibly hide," Itakura said. "When we slid open the shelf closet, there she was, nervously curled up on her side." The woman told police she had no place to live and first sneaked into the man's house about a year ago when he left it unlocked. She had moved a mattress into the small closet space and even took showers, Itakura said, calling the woman "neat and clean."

My wife doesn't think Japan is safe anymore. But she's not the type to fear anyone either. We were talking the other day about how we must prepare Musashi for anything. The more I think about it, the more I think having sword skills might not be such a bad idea. At the very least, some defensive techniques and an understanding of this changing world.

What are you guys talking about?!? All the person did was sleep in the guys closest and steal food. Yes creepy, but dangerous i don't think so. I mean come on if that crap happened in the states, the homeless person prolly would have slashed the guys throat open while slept, robbed him blind, and fled (in that order, although i imagine its hard to rob a corpse blind since they can't see anything in the first place). Just the fact that the homeless woman didn't do anything to the guy says alot about this country. I think i had a conversationr ecently about getting angry and how to deal with it. Another ALTs japanese friend was saying how she was just so angry she wanted to kill herself. While the ALT and I (both Americans) were like Kill Yourself?!? When i get angry i want to kill other people!
And while yes there is the ever so slightly increasing rate of crime in Japan its still no where near anywhere else in the world. I've walked down some of the shadiest streets in Japan and even then the drunk unkempt throwing up on the side of the street tried to help me when i asked them for directions.
So I must disagree with you guys about Japan being dangerous, I still think it is quite the safe place to be (not counting external dangers like the rest of Asia) Although after reading this story I do have to say that it became a lot weirder in my opinion.

yes, I think I agree with yopparaisaru (above) while being weird, it wasn't that dangerous (?)
I don't think Japan is dangerous, its the safest country I have been to and I have been to over 40 (I kid you not)
