Good idea, but it would be better to check to see if your local bank doesn't have foreign currency accounts. I don't know how many other banks do it, but Daishi Bank in Niigata now will allow customers to create US Dollar accounts. That is to say, you take your Japanese Yen in (like normally) and ask them to add it to a separate account you create for US Dollars. It keeps the money in dollars and allows you to withdrawl the money in dollars, and even keeps your bank book updated in dollars. My wife opened one for us, and she wouldn't do it if it wasn't worth it. She's very money smart.
