It has been my experience in Japan that at a lot of schools (ES~JHS), boys and girls are seperated. Is this a good idea when they have reached puberty? I think Japan already seems to have a problem with communicating between genders so why should this communication barrier be supported in school? I'm sure we've all been faced this problem, you break the class into groups but a student starts crying or refuses to participate in the activity because they are the only boy or girl in the group.
Is seperating genders at puberty a good or bad thing? Or, should they be forced to mix? For example, when there is a school assembly, sitting the students in a M, F, M, F format.

In my humble opinion I would think the bad out weigh the good (??)

every one of my class seating arrangements are boy/girl, in all of the grades and classes i teach, and i think its a good idea. ive also never gotten the impression that its any more of a gender gap concerning communication, than there is in the US.
however, i think its a bad idea that i have to sit in school for 2 and a half hours, just because my schedule says im supposed to. despite classes being over and having nothing to do but look at these forums.

In my humblest and unknowledgeable and unknowing and you all should really not listen to my opinion anyhow......... I think that for the most part it is done here out of tradition more than anything. If left up to the kids themselves the classrooms would have all the boys on one side of the room and all the girls on the other. I know, I have actually seen that and it was truly freaky.....shiver shiver shiver. But seriously how are they separated when they are sitting boy, girl, boy, girl, boy, girl etc etc etc? Are you suggesting somehow that they should be given the option to sit as they choose? I for one would have a problem with that seeing as how the more popular kids would group together and the less popular.....well you know where that is going. But my point is I think that they are NOT separated at all, well maybe for gym/PE classes. Oh and a hint in creating groups......until the kids get used to your style of teaching for JHS use their school lunch grouping/kyushouku groups and split them in the middle if necessary to make smaller ones. That automatically keeps boys and girls together. Dont give the students the option to create their own groups all the time. You will always have a few that get left out and the atmosphere in the classroom can get pretty chilly until everyone gets seated. The less options you give to the kids the easier it is to control and get things done. As a carrot if the kids are working well and listening and participating in your classes tell them the next time they can make groups of their own choosing and play that off back and forth. They will apppreciate it and will understand that they have to perform well to get what they want. Remember you are the teacher/instructor first and their friend or aquaintance 2nd, give in to their crying or moaning just because they cry or moan and you will always have problems from someone. ;D

Good advice, Paul.
Over the years, I have tried every kind of group-forming idea there is...I think. At the end of the day, I think the fastest and best way to make groups is dividing them by their lunch groups. There's always boys and girls mixed together.
